A unique approach to improving outcomes for young people, the youth-led approach represents a spectrum of opportunities that empower young people to be leaders in their communities. This article explores the principles that underlie the philosophy of the youth-led approach, including an assessment of its unique features and the challenges entailed in its practical implementation. This article does not seek to establish a shopping list of features that are essential for an activity to be labelled as youth-led, nor has it set out to suggest that a youth-led approach is the only or best way to engage and empower young people.
Key findings illustrate that the underlying principles of the youth-led approach are to provide young people with an appropriate and supportive environment to freely express their voices and for the outcome of such expressions to directly translate to positive and tangible changes for all young people.
