Abstract
Purpose: This article aims to explore the formation of legal awareness among young people with a specific focus on their understanding of fair trial principles. The research examines the essential components of a fair trial, including access to justice, the right to legal representation and free legal aid, impartiality and independence of the judiciary, the right to motivated court decision, etc.
Methodology: The main research method was a questionnaire survey. In September-October 2023, authors conducted a pilot study on the state of legal awareness of student youth in Ukraine. The sample consisted of 258 respondents. The survey covered certain aspects of the right to a fair trial that are important for the formation of legal awareness among young people.
Findings: The results showed that a significant number of respondents are unaware of the international instruments that protect the right to a fair trial and the components of this right. The survey revealed barriers and challenges faced by young people in exercising their right to a fair trial, including issues related to court fees, conflicts of interest, etc.
Value:. This article emphasizes the importance of raising legal awareness among young people to ensure their active participation in the justice system and to protect its fundamental guarantees. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the role of legal education and legal frameworks in shaping the future of justice for youth in Ukraine and beyond.
