Abstract
Purpose: to examine linguistic and cognitive aspects of Ukrainian students’ communicative habits under the influence of English. The purpose of the study was also to explore how English words using correlates with use of Ukrainian.
Methodology: encompasses a set of methods used in the research, such as: a case study of communication of young people; comparative analysis; content analysis. The study involved 18-24-year-old students of Ukrainian higher educational institution in Western Ukraine. The research was conducted among 156 students in the summer of 2023. In terms of data collection, the author used a case study and a questionnaire.
Results: indicate that Ukrainian young people use English words while speaking Ukrainian. 20 % of respondents use English words regularly, and 20 % use them quite often. 44% often use English words in their communication and only 16 % use them rarely. The author came to the conclusion that there is a tendency to use English words regularly by young Ukrainians and that learning of English stimulates young people to even substitute Ukrainian vocabulary by English.
Originality: is in the analysis of communicative skills of Ukrainian students who study English as a foreign language. English significantly affects lexicon application in everyday communication of young people. Results of questionnaires also prove the idea that environment is as important as other extralinguistic factors.
