ABSTRACT
This study encompassed the role of social media as a platform to present one’s own image through their physical appearance. In today’s ever-changing generation, selfies have been the youth’s basic yet innovative tool to express and present their images on social media. Thus, the researchers of this study determined the role of Instagram in supporting the idea of self-presentation among the youth through their selfies.
This quantitative study determined the information of the respondents; how the respondents perceived Instagram as a social media application that depicts the concepts of self-presentation. This was accomplished through a survey questionnaire.
A total of ninety (90) respondents from the Senior High School Department of UST Angelicum College were the sample of this study. They were equally divided according to gender – 45 males and 45 females. All of them have Instagram account. They are from 15 – 18 years old who are in the transition phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood.
The findings showed that (1) the majority of the respondents were posting selfies on Instagram to allow them to present their ideal self. (2) Majority of the respondents agreed that they post selfies so that people would be impressed with how they look. Lastly, (3) majority of the respondents also agreed that the selfies they post are accurate representations of how they view themselves.
