Abstract
The legal system presents many challenges for Canadian citizens. The complexity of the
system, the language and style in which laws are written, the high costs of lawyers and a
general lack of knowledge of the law are all factors which decrease access to justice for the
ordinary person. This article briefly details some of the most common obstacles to access
to justice before introducing public legal education and information (PLEI) as an important
part of the solution. The possible impact of PLEI is addressed by using Éducaloi, a Quebecbased PLEI organisation, as an example. PLEI’s limits are put forward and the need for the
legal community to get involved in achieving greater access to justice is emphasised
