Description

Abstract

Purpose: Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most significant social issues affecting the world, with a higher prevalence in developing countries. In Africa, GBV cases remain worrying and continue to pose a considerable problem despite efforts put in place to address this issue. Therefore, this review aims to examine different primary interventions that may aid in addressing the issue of GBV among African youth.

Design/Methodology/Approach: A qualitative research approach was adopted to generate data. Since this research used secondary data, research articles were found through online searches in various databases. A deductive content analysis approach for the data analysis was used. This resulted from utilising previously undertaken research, theories, and conceptual frameworks to formulate the discussion.

Findings: In Africa, socio-cultural and economic factors are the principal risk factors promoting GBV. These factors often result in harmful practices that encourage the domination of men and boys over women and girls. The key findings of this review highlight the importance of using primary prevention approaches such as the Gender Transformative Approach and Gender Synchronised Approach as proactive measures to prevent GBV.

Originality/Value: Drawing from many articles on GBV published in Africa, it should be noted that many of them focus on reactive interventions, which look more at the treatment and support for victims. The value of this review is that it focuses on primary intervention, which is a proactive measure to prevent GBV from occurring.
