Abstract

Despite growing discussions on mental well-being, many students lack adequate knowledge about mental health, contributing to stigma and reluctance in seeking help. The transition to university life presents unique psychological challenges, including academic stress, social pressures, and career uncertainties, which can significantly impact emotional well-being. Understanding how students perceive mental health and available support systems is crucial for fostering a healthier campus environment. This study explored perceptions of mental health and mental health professionals in university students, focusing on stressors, help-seeking behaviors, stigmas, and support systems. A total of 101 participants, aged 18-25, were surveyed with open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was done which revealed gaps in students’ understanding of mental health. Stigma, driven by societal misconceptions and fears of judgment, emerged as a significant barrier to seeking help. Major stressors included academic pressures, career uncertainties, and family expectations. Although varying levels of support were reported from social circles, participants emphasized on the need for enhanced mental health education in university curricula, improved communication skills, and accessible counseling services on campuses. The study highlights the urgency of destigmatizing mental health, promoting help-seeking behaviors, and establishing comprehensive support systems to effectively address students’ mental health needs. Recommendations include raising awareness, developing educational interventions, advocating for policy changes, and fostering community engagement in university settings.
